Osteopathy for Neck Pain

Statistically, one in ten people have neck pain at any given time.

The neck has a large role to play in supporting our big heads, which weighs on average 5kg.

There are a variety of different conditions, types of pain and associated symptoms that can be associated with neck pain. These conditions can include muscle strain, joint restriction/ sprain, degeneration and disc-related injuries

We see a lot of patients with acute injuries, including torticollis or a facet joint sprain which are very common. Patients are usually in a lot of pain due to the acute inflammation in the joints of the neck which cause muscle spasm surrounding the area.

As an Osteopath we will determine the cause of the injury even when it sometimes seems to be as simple as turning your head too quickly, but there is usually some underlying movement issues and lifestyle factors that have led to this point.

Osteopathic treatment can help by reducing the muscle spasm in the area and by mobilising the joint. We will use our hands treatment techniques including soft tissue massage, mobilise the joints, dry needling and we may use manipulation to achieve optimal joint motion and muscle relaxation.

Depending on your injury we may recommend different types of advice including ice therapy to help reduce inflammation in the joints and some gentle exercises. The severity of the injury and underlying factors will determine how many treatments you need to settle the pain levels and regain your normal range of movement.

We will then give you some pointers on exercise and lifestyle advice so you can leave knowing how to manage the problem and continue to improve further at home and stop this from happening in the future.
