New Lifting Advice / Guidelines
The way we think about lifting and posture has evolved, and SIRA’s (NSW State Insurance Regulatory Authority) new guidelines reflect that shift. Forget the old advice of keeping a rigid, locked-up back whenever you pick something up. Now, the focus is on a more natural, flexible posture that works with your body, rather than against it.
For years, the idea was to always lift with a perfectly straight back, bend your knees, and keep everything as stiff as possible. But that’s no longer seen as the best way to avoid injury. The new approach encourages you to maintain the natural curves of your spine (yes, they’re supposed to be there!) and focus on using your legs and core for strength, rather than relying solely on a rigid posture (Verywell Health).
Instead of following a one-size-fits-all technique, the updated advice lets you adapt to each situation. Whether you’re lifting something heavy or awkwardly shaped, the key is keeping the load close to your body and making sure your spine stays in a neutral position—slightly curved but not overly tense (OSHA).
By staying flexible and focusing on balance, you can lift more effectively without risking unnecessary strain. It’s about moving with ease, rather than forcing your body into stiff, unnatural positions.
